Scott Fleming of the U.S. Department of Education has forwarded Treasury a letter from a constituent of Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Ala. In the letter, constituent Martha Mueller suggests making the interest on all federal student loans and the Alaska student loan deductible.

[1] Thank you for your letter on behalf of Martha Mueller concerning interest on student loans should be tax deductible.

[2] Since this is a matter that falls within the jurisdiction of the Department of the Treasury, your correspondence has been referred to Linda L. Robertson, Assistant Secretary for Legislative Affairs at that agency. I trust you will hear from her soon.
