Dear Speaker Pelosi, Leader McCarthy, Chairman Neal and Ranking Member Brady:

On behalf of the Coalition for Energy Efficient Jobs & Investment, thank you for including an extension of the Section 179D deduction for energy efficient commercial buildings in H.R. 1865. This retrospective and prospective extension ensures the continued availability of an important incentive that helps drive economic and employment growth through energy savings.

Our organizations and companies represent a broad spectrum of the U.S. economy. They include real estate, manufacturing, architecture, contracting, engineering, building services, financing, labor, education, environmental and energy efficiency advocates. We represent many small businesses that drive and sustain American job growth.

Extension of the Section 179D deduction will continue to incentivize building owners to leverage billions of dollars in private capital to introduce energy efficient enhancements in thousands of commercial and larger multifamily buildings, helping to create and preserve jobs in the industries listed above and resulting in critical energy savings.

We greatly appreciate your leadership to ensure continued access to this important incentive. The Coalition hopes to work with you in 2020 to evaluate ways to enhance the Section 179D deduction to ensure that it continues to be an engine of growth for our economy and a tool to further energy savings. Additionally, to help provide certainty for the organizations and companies that utilize the Section 179D deduction, the Coalition encourages Congress to make Section 179D permanent. Doing so would encourage additional investment in energy efficient improvements by providing organizations and companies with the planning certainty they have lacked from previous lapses and short-term extensions, maximizing the benefits of the incentive.

Thank you again for including an extension of Section 179D in H.R. 1865. We look forward to working with you to enhance and make permanent Section 179D in 2020.

Sincerely,
