Utah Tax Commission Releases March 2020 Sales, Fuel Tax Reports

SUMMARY BY TAX ANALYSTS

The Utah State Tax Commission released reports on March sales tax and fuel tax data as an analysis of the economic effects of COVID-19; transactions subject to sales tax and fuel tax decreased 0.4 percent and 13 percent, respectively.

Reports for April statistics will be available sometime in June.

Updated Tax Return Data – Sales and Fuel Tax Statistics

Salt Lake City, Utah — The Utah State Tax Commission has released a report with data showing the impact of COVID-19 on March taxable sales. The reports show taxable sales (as reported on sales tax returns) by filing period, location and industry. A separate report shows taxable gallons as reported on fuel tax returns by filing period. This data, posted to the Tax Commission's website at https://tax.utah.gov/econstats/tax-return-data, shows total transactions that are subject to sales tax decreased by about 0.4% in March. Motor fuel gallons that are subject to fuel tax decreased by 13.0%.

The data is used by state and local governments, researchers, media and businesses as they assess economic conditions and adjust their budgets to reflect the challenges posed by quarantine and other measures taken as a result of COVID-19.

The April data will be available by about mid-June.

The data presented here is preliminary and is subject to revision due to late returns, amended returns and other changes that impact tax return data.
