Virginia Tax Department Explains Tax Payment Extensions, Interest Accrual

Dated Mar. 27, 2020

SUMMARY BY TAX ANALYSTS

The Virginia Department of Taxation reminded taxpayers that although the deadline to pay 2019 state income taxes without penalty has been extended from May 1, 2020, to June 1, 2020, in response to COVID-19, interest will still accrue beginning May 1.

The department also provided guidance on extension payment options.

The filing deadline for Virginia individual income taxes is just around the corner — Friday, May 1, 2020. If you won't be able to file by the deadline, don't worry. Everyone has an automatic 6-month extension.

In addition, thanks to the state's tax relief actions to address COVID-19, you also have an extra month to pay your taxes this year. You need to pay by June 1, 2020 to avoid any penalties. Interest still accrues starting May 1, so if you can pay earlier, you should. (Note: Interest is required by law, so we're not able to waive it.)
