OFFICE OF THE HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER
September 28, 2000
ARMEY -- HERGER TO LIEBERMAN: LOCK AWAY SOCIAL SECURITY
STOP OBSTRUCTING SENATE CONSIDERATION OF THE SOCIAL SECURITY LOCKBOX
[1] In a letter sent to Senator Joseph Lieberman today, House Majority Leader Dick Armey and Rep. Wally Herger (R-CA) asked the Senator to urge Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle to stop obstructing Senate consideration of the Social Security Lockbox legislation. The text of the letter appears below:
* * * * *
[2] "We are pleased to learn that you are still meeting with Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle to discuss issues facing our nation. Because Social Security is an important issue to our nation's seniors, we strongly encourage you to urge Senator Daschle to stop obstructing Senate consideration of the Social Security Lockbox legislation, H.R. 1259, which overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives in May 1999.
[3] "As you know, Senate Democrats voted six times during this session of Congress to prevent Senate consideration of the Social Security Lockbox. Our seniors deserve to know that 100 percent of the Social Security Trust Fund surpluses will not be spent on other government programs that have nothing to do with retirement security.
[4] "As a leader in your party and a vice presidential candidate, we are confident that you can influence Senator Daschle and other members of your party in the Senate to agree with our strong contention that Social Security should be locked away.
[5] "Please work with us to make sure the raid on Social Security has ended now and in the future."
