[1] WASHINGTON -- Today, CSE applauds the bi-partisan attempt by the U.S. House of Representatives to override the Clinton-Gore veto of the Marriage Penalty Elimination Act. Five Democrats reversed their previous vote to end the marriage penalty and voted against saving Americans from this unfair tax.

[2] As shown by the veto, the Clinton-Gore administration is paying lip service to tax cuts that they promised American families during their 1992 and 1996 campaigns. But, as their track record shows, when given the opportunity to sign a tax cut into law, the Clinton/Gore administration give us nothing more than excuses and empty rhetoric.

[3] An overwhelming majority of the American people believe the marriage penalty is unfair and should be eliminated. According to Marty Reiser, CSE's Vice-President of Public Affairs, "the truth is that currently, two working individuals filing as a married couple will pay more than when they filed as single people, often as much as $1,400 more."

[4] Al Gore says he will fight for the people and against the powerful, but he and Clinton have vetoed tax relief for the American people.

[5] The 5 Democrats who reversed their vote today are: Neil Abercrombie (HI-1); Rod Blagojevich (IL-5); Bernie Thompson (MS-2); Marcy Kaptur (OH-9); and James Clyburn (SC-6).
