First National Virtual Settlement Month Resolves 148 Tax Cases

Posted on Apr. 27, 2021

The IRS Office of Chief Counsel’s first National Virtual Settlement Month resulted in the resolution of 148 Tax Court cases.

The settlement events, which took place in March in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, led to nearly 240 taxpayers meeting with chief counsel employees and pro bono organizations, according to an April 26 release.

“The March Settlement Days campaign yielded great results with well over half of participating taxpayers settling their cases on a basis agreeable to them without having to represent themselves in Tax Court,”  IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig said.

Virtual settlement days — also called pro bono days — connect unrepresented taxpayers with help to resolve their Tax Court cases, either online or by phone because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the program, unrepresented taxpayers can get free tax advice from low-income taxpayer clinics, volunteer attorneys from the American Bar Association, and other pro bono organizations.

At the March events, taxpayers were also able to discuss payment options with IRS collection employees and consult Taxpayer Advocate Service employees about unrelated tax matters not before the Tax Court, according to the release.
