AMERICAN SHAREHOLDERS ASSOCIATION
March 15, 2000
[1] WASHINGTON - The American Shareholders Association endorsed the Small Savers Retirement Enhancement Act (HR 1322) today, saying the bill would make it dramatically easier to save for a secure retirement. By increasing the allowable contribution to individual retirement accounts from $2000 to $5000, HR 1322 would assist Americans in amassing an adequate nest egg for their golden years.
[2] HR 1322 is sponsored by Congressman Elton Gallegly (R-CA), and has a bipartisan group of 41 cosponsors, including Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R-NM).
[3] The bill would also adjust for inflation the amount of deductible contributions to IRA's -- a change, said ASA president Grover Norquist, that is long overdue. "The current contribution limit is a few decades old, so this is really just congress catching up to the 21th century. It should not be a controversial bill," Norquist said.
[4] "Too often, politicians criticize the American people for not saving, then punish them when they do" Norquist added. "This bill will help ease the crushing burden on people who are prudent enough to save and patriotic enough to invest in America's future. It makes sense."
[5] The American Shareholders Association is an education project of Americans for Tax Reform, a non-partisan coalition of taxpayers and taxpayer groups. Widely regarded as the most influential taxpayer group in the country, every Republican presidential candidate has signed ATR's Taxpayer Protection Pledge.
