Thank you for your letter addressing phased retirement and the pending project to issue regulations that would allow partial distributions to be made to employees who are in a phased retirement program. We appreciate the interest of the Senate Special Committee on Aging, including its support for this specific project. We especially want to express appreciation for the cooperation we have had between your staff and Treasury Department staff on the important issue of phased retirement.

Thank you for your comments on the proposed regulations. We have received similar comments from other individuals and groups that have submitted comments on the proposed regulations. We will certainly give serious consideration to these comments as we move forward to issue final regulations allowing phased retirement distributions.
