NEWS FROM THE DEMOCRATIC LEADERS
Tom Daschle and Nancy Pelosi
Wednesday, June 25, 2003
[1] Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle today sent a letter to President Bush, calling on him to urge the Republican leadership to convene a conference committee for immediate consideration of the child tax credit expansion.
[2] The following is the full text of the letter:
June 25, 2003
The President
The White House
Washington, D.C. 20500
Dear Mr. President:
[3] We, along with a chorus of religious and civic leaders around the country, appreciate your public support for Senate-passed legislation to provide a child tax credit for the families of 12 million low-income children, including one million children of military families. The groundswell of national support for this bill has grown tremendously over recent weeks. Americans nationwide have sent a resounding message that they want to see this important provision enacted into law.
[4] However, Republican leadership in the House and Senate continue to stall final action on the Senate-passed bill. It has been three weeks since the Senate passed this legislation by a nearly unanimous vote of 94-2. Likewise, a majority of the House of Representatives voted in support of the Senate's provision almost two weeks ago. Despite this overwhelming support, House and Senate leadership have refused to convene a conference committee on this legislation. Unless Congress acts now, the families of over twelve million low-income children will not receive much-needed tax relief when their children return to school in the fall.
[5] Mr. President, your leadership is critical to preventing this from happening. Therefore, we call on you to urge the Republican leadership to convene a conference committee for immediate consideration of this bill. Every day they delay is another day these families must wait.
Nancy Pelosi
House Democratic Leader
Tom Daschle
Senate Democratic Leader
