Demings Requests Update on Expedited Refunds

Dear Secretary Mnuchin:

Firstly, I would like to thank you for this morning’s announcement regarding the 90-day extension on federal tax payments. Under these trying circumstances, it is important for our constituents to have financial security and this will alleviate some of their concerns until we can return our economy to a more normalized situation.

Secondly, my office has received numerous requests for assistance by constituents waiting for their tax refund. Many of them filed their tax returns weeks ago and have yet to receive their refunds. They rely on this money to help make ends meet and are in especially dire circumstances in our current environment. It is important that the IRS review these tax filings expeditiously and issue the necessary refunds as soon as possible to help alleviate the financial hardship experienced by our constituents.

In light of these concerns, I am requesting that the Department of Treasury and the IRS issue immediate guidance regarding the current review of submitted tax returns and an update on expedited refunds to taxpayers who have already submitted their returns to the IRS.
