=============== SUMMARY ===============

Lester P. Lamm of the Highway Users Federation (HUF) has written Treasury saying the organization joins with the 113 cosponsors of House Resolution 225 in articulating its strong opposition to the use of a motor fuel excise tax for deficit reduction. Lamm writes that the use of a motor fuels excise tax for deficit reduction will put disproportionate burdens on the poor who live in rural and small town America and who require motor vehicles to meet their essential transportation needs. Federal preemption of state financing for repairing an aging highway system is shortsighted and counterproductive, according to HUF. Lamm encloses a list of 360 national and state organizations that are similarly opposed to the proposal.
