NTU Endorses Bill to Limit State Taxing of Nonresident Workers

On behalf of National Taxpayers Union (NTU), I write in support of your legislation, H.R. 4962, the "Multi-State Worker Tax Fairness Act of 2016." This bill would prohibit states from taxing nonresident remote workers during periods in which they are physically present in a different state. In doing so, the legislation would bar states from using a "convenience test" to tax multi-state workers. Passage of H.R. 4962 would prevent a potential tax nightmare for the millions of telecommuters (and counting) across the nation, as well as for their employers.

Given our current economic climate, telecommuting provides individuals with increased workplace flexibility as they strive to maximize cost savings and productivity. Not only do employees save on personal expenses such as gasoline or transit fares, but they also help their businesses to substantially lower real estate and energy costs -- savings that ultimately contribute to stronger financial security and fewer layoffs. Telecommuters also tend to be more efficient employees, as they are spared from arduous trips to the workplace and are given the flexibility to meet non-work responsibilities.

If government officials truly wish to demonstrate their commitment to growing our economy, they need to implement legislation that will help strengthen American businesses and empower American workers. The Multi-State Worker Tax Fairness Act would do just that. NTU is pleased to endorse H.R. 4962 and we urge all Members of Congress to cosponsor your bill and work towards its swift passage.
