CHAMBER GEARS UP GRASSROOTS NETWORK SWIFT PASSAGE OF TAX CUT THE TOP PRIORITY

=============== FULL TEXT ===============

[1] WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The United States Chamber of Commerce called on its grassroots bench strength to lobby Congress in favor of swift action to cut marginal rates by $958 billion over the next 10 years and reduce the number of tax brackets from five to four -- the centerpiece of President Bush's $1.6 trillion tax cut package.

[2] "Members of Congress are going to hear early and often from business owners about the need to cut marginal tax rates," said Bruce Josten, Chamber executive vice president. "The Chamber's grassroots network reaches into every congressional district and cuts across political lines."

[3] The Chamber's Grassroots Action Information Network -- or GAIN -- motivates tens of thousands of businesses across the country to phone, write or lobby their senators and representative. Chamber federation members and non-member supporters have also been contacted and urged to support Bush's tax proposal -- effectively doubling the size of our grassroots network.

[4] The House expects to begin debate on the rate-cut legislation (H.R. 3), approved by the Ways and Means Committee, as early as Wednesday. The Chamber is a leader of the Tax Relief Coalition, a group of nearly 100 trade associations and businesses representing millions of businesses that advocate the Bush tax package.

[5] "Americans pay more of their incomes to the federal government today then they did at any time since 1944, a time of great national emergency," said Josten. "Cutting income taxes will help lighten the burden for millions of small businesses that file individually and help the uncertain economy by putting more money in the hands of consumers."

[6] The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business federation representing more than three million businesses and organizations of every size, sector and region.
