Michigan Bill Proposes Income Tax Credit for Teachers Amid COVID-19

Posted on Sep. 8, 2020

A newly filed Michigan bill would provide a tax credit for teachers and employees required to use their own internet service for online learning during the coronavirus state of emergency.

H.B. 6182, introduced September 3 by Rep. Rachel Hood (D), would allow state-certified teachers or employees to claim a $50 refundable income tax credit to help cover internet costs while providing distance learning during school closures.

The tax credit would be available for the 2020 and 2021 tax years. Language in the bill specifies that the credit would be $100 for married taxpayers filing jointly if both spouses are state-certified teachers or employees providing online learning during the pandemic.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) recently extended Michigan’s state of emergency until October 1; the emergency was originally declared on March 10.

H.B. 6182 was referred to the House Committee on Tax Policy

Hood did not respond to a request for comment by press time.
