Yesterday, the Smithsonian Board of Regents said it would set up a special committee to review the questions raised by Sen. Grassley's February 21 letter to the Smithsonian Chancellor.
Today, Grassley staff met with two members of the Board. During today's meeting, the Board members indicated that the special committee they envision would report in 30 days.
Here is a comment from Sen. Grassley:
"I appreciate the Board's interest in a dialogue and participation in today's meeting. There could be a benefit from an outside special committee reviewing the Board's effectiveness and governance and how best practices for the charitable sector and government-type expenditure rules could be applied to the Smithsonian. At the same time, I expect to receive in a timely manner from the Board of Regents candid and complete responses to the straightforward, fact-seeking questions that were in my February letter. I anticipate making additional inquires, too, as my effort continues to safeguard the resources of the Smithsonian and help ensure the success of the Smithsonian's mission of collecting and protecting America's treasures and making them available for public education and enjoyment."
