WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The House Democratic Caucus' Steering Committee voted today to appoint nine new members to the Committee on Ways and Means in the 110th Congress.

"I look forward to welcoming our new members to the Committee in January," said Chairman-designate Charles B. Rangel. "The 110th Congress presents us with a wonderful opportunity to work together to solve the problems facing this great nation. I am encouraged by the commitment, energy and expertise these new members bring to our panel and I look forward to working closely with them in the months and years to come."

The following nine Democratic Representatives will join the exclusive panel in January after final approval of Committee assignments:

The Honorable Earl Blumenauer -- Congressman Blumenauer represents Oregon's Third district. He has devoted his entire career to public service and is currently finishing his fifth term in the House of Representatives, where he served on both the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the International Relations Committee.

The Honorable Ron Kind -- Congressman Ron Kind has represented Wisconsin's Third Congressional District since 1997. In Congress, Kind has focused his attention on fiscal responsibility, education, agriculture, healthcare and conservation. Among the many issues Kind said he hopes to tackle on the committee are making college more affordable, promoting rural health care and advocating for tax fairness.

The Honorable Bill Pascrell, Jr. -- Congressman Pascrell will be serving his sixth term representing the people of New Jersey's Eighth Congressional District. The former mayor of Paterson, NJ, Congressman Pascrell now represents an urban/suburban district with deep roots into the creation of America's industrial manufacturing economy. Representing one of America's most densely populated and diverse district's, Pascrell has worked to strengthen the middle class, reinvigorate the economy, and ensure that the federal government meets New Jersey's homeland security needs.

The Honorable Shelley Berkley -- Congresswoman Berkley represents Nevada's First Congressional District and is finishing her fourth term in office. She represents one of the fastest growing communities in the U.S. and has worked to improve transportation, enhance veterans' care, expand renewable energy, increase access to healthcare for all Americans.

The Honorable Joseph Crowley -- Congressman Crowley is a four-term member from New York City. He has taken a leadership role on trade, banking, immigration and foreign relations issues. On the Committee he will focus on New York's competitiveness and ensuring New York City's role as the business capital of the United States.

The Honorable Kendrick Meek -- Congressman Meek represents Florida's Seventeenth Congressional District and is finishing his second term in office. He represents parts of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties and will serve as the lone Florida Member on the Committee. He will work to provide affordable housing, business growth and development, the creation of new jobs, and making the federal tax code fairer to help make working and middle class families more secure.

The Honorable Chris Van Hollen -- Congressman Van Hollen is entering his third term representing Maryland's Eighth Congressional District. He has been a leader on many of the issues facing the Ways and Means Committee and currently serves as a Vice Chairman of the Democratic Task Force on Budget and Tax Policy. In addition, Congressman Van Hollen was a member of the Social Security Working Group established by Speaker-Elect Nancy Pelosi to develop the Democratic position on that critical issue. As a member of the Maryland Senate, he served eight years on the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee, including four years as the Vice Chair of the full Committee, and Chair of the Health and Human Services Subcommittee.

The Honorable Allison Schwartz -- Congresswoman Schwartz is completing her first term representing the Thirteenth District of Pennsylvania.
