Tax Notes Editors’ Wish List: Fall 2019

Posted on Oct. 25, 2019

Roughly 800 authors contribute to Tax Notes each year. While most of our submissions are by invitation, we review unsolicited submissions daily. Our contributors are professors and academics, lawyers, researchers, policymakers, and analysts — and they come from all over the world. We will review any tax-related article, but we recognize this call can be broad and daunting when you’re trying to decide what to write about.

While each of our magazines, Tax Notes Federal, State, and International, shares contributor guidelines, the content can vary greatly. To help you decide what to submit, here are a few items on our editors’ wish list:

Tax Notes Federal: Editor in Chief, Ariel Greenblum

A good length for Tax Notes Federal articles is between 4,000 and 14,000 words. However, if the article meets the 1,500-word minimum, the team will accept the submission for review. Over the past quarter, hot topics have included global intangible low-taxed income regulations, taxing foreign partners, and foreign-derived intangible income.

The federal team is currently looking for articles on the following topics:

  • partnerships, both section 199A and the Bipartisan Budget Act;

  • FDII;

  • the future of estate planning;

  • analysis of presidential candidates’ tax proposals;

  • tax incentives of the domestic auto industry; and

  • the differences in income tax between civilians and U.S. military men and women.

Tax Notes State: Editor in Chief, Jéanne Rauch-Zender

For Tax Notes State, a good article length is going to simply meet the 1,500-word minimum. In the last quarter, hot topics have included Public Law 86-272, Airbnb’s voluntary tax collection efforts, and gross receipts taxes.

The Tax Notes State editors are actively seeking articles from state and local tax professionals from the following states:

  • Wisconsin

  • Arkansas

  • Missouri

  • Georgia

  • Mississippi

  • Nevada

  • Nebraska

  • Kansas

  • Oklahoma

  • North Dakota

  • South Dakota

  • Idaho

  • Colorado

  • Wyoming

Tax Notes International: Editor in Chief, Cathleen Phillips

For Tax Notes International, if an article meets the 1,500-word minimum, the team will accept the submission for review. Popular topics for the past quarter have included the digital economy, TCJA guidance, Brexit, and cross-border dispute resolution.

The Tax Notes International editors are looking for articles from the following countries:

  • Japan

  • China

  • India

  • Singapore

  • Mexico

  • Brazil

All Tax Notes magazines accept articles for review on a rolling basis, so there is no need to worry about submission deadlines. Our editors will review any article on a tax-related topic of your choosing as long as it has not been published elsewhere.
