Private Practice

Eric Solomon has joined Steptoe & Johnson LLP as a partner in Washington. He will focus on transactional work and advising clients on tax policy issues and tax controversy. He most recently was co-director of EY’s national tax department. He previously served in several roles at Treasury, beginning in 1999 as senior adviser for policy. Solomon also was the deputy assistant secretary for tax policy and for regulatory affairs before being confirmed as assistant secretary for tax policy in 2006, a position he held until 2009. Earlier in his career, he was assistant chief counsel (corporate) at the IRS. He earned his JD from the University of Virginia School of Law and his LLM from New York University School of Law.

Sam Kamyans has joined Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP’s global projects and finance practice as a partner in Washington. He focuses on federal income tax planning and negotiating renewable energy industry and private equity transactions. He was a partner at Baker McKenzie. From 2009 to 2012, he was an attorney specializing in passthroughs and special industries in the IRS Office of Chief Counsel. He earned his JD from Loyola Law School and his LLM from Georgetown University Law Center.

Karen E. Yates has joined the private client practice group at Withers as a partner in New Haven, Connecticut. She focuses on wealth transfer tax planning and fiduciary administration. Previously, she was a shareholder at LeClairRyan after an earlier stint with Withers from 2002 to 2015. She earned her JD from Cornell Law School.

Stanley E. Heyman has joined Barnes & Thornburg LLP’s corporate department as a partner in Los Angeles. His practice focuses on federal, state, and local tax planning; estate planning; tax controversy; and probate, estate, and trust administration. He had been with Jackson Tidus. He earned his JD from the University of Southern California Law Center and his MS in business taxation also from USC.

BDO USA LLP has named the following as tax partners:

  • Carrie Burnett, in Dallas, focuses on closely held businesses and family wealth planning and tax strategies for wealthy individuals. Before joining BDO in 2014, she was a senior tax manager for UHY LLP. She earned her MS from Texas A&M University.

  • Yuan Chou, in Washington, focuses on tax accounting methods. Before joining BDO in 2007, he was a manager at PwC. He earned his JD and LLM from Temple University School of Law.

  • Dominic Coppolella, in Philadelphia, specializes in public accounting and individual tax issues. He has worked for BDO for seven years as a tax associate and manager and earned his MS from Villanova University.

  • Doug Curtis, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has experience in electrical systems design and construction and is part of BDO’s green energy tax services team. He has worked for BDO for 16 years and earned his BS from Grand Valley State University.

  • Barbara Derus, in Minneapolis, focuses on international taxation and transfer pricing. She has worked as a tax director with PwC and director of global transfer pricing at Ecolab Inc. She received her MBT from the University of Minnesota.

  • Peter Diakovasilis, in Melville, New York, focuses on public accounting. He has worked for BDO for 11 years and earned his MS in taxation from Long Island University.

  • Eric Fischer, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has experience in federal income tax issues for private and public companies. Before joining BDO in 2011, he was an associate with KPMG LLP. He received his MS in taxation from Michigan State University.

  • Matthew Gomes, in San Jose, California, has experience providing tax consultation and compliance services to private and public companies. He earned his BBA from the University of Massachusetts.

  • Tony Manners, in Atlanta, focuses on public accounting, state taxation, transfer pricing, and changes in corporate structuring. He previously worked as a state tax director with Koch Industries Inc., a multistate tax services director with Deloitte Tax LLP, and vice president of taxation at Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. He earned his MBA from Monmouth University.

  • Matt Manosky, in Chicago, has experience helping private-equity-backed portfolio companies and multinational corporations with tax matters. Before joining BDO in 2009, he worked for Deloitte. He earned his MS from Walsh College.

  • Daniel Newton, in Boston, focuses on accounting, tax compliance, and planning. He has worked as a senior tax manager for KPMG and tax director for Medtronic PLC. He earned his MS in taxation from the Bentley University Graduate School of Business.

  • Traci Pumo, in West Palm Beach, Florida, advises clients on family wealth and taxation, personal financial planning, estate and gift taxation, and wealth transfers. She previously worked as a senior manager at EY and earned her MS, JD, and LLM from the University of Florida.

  • Jason Rhodes, in Cincinnati, focuses on public accounting for public and privately owned organizations and tax compliance and planning. He has worked as a senior tax manager and tax director with Grant Thornton LLP and received his MBA from Oakland University.

  • Brian Rose, in New York, focuses on financial reporting, tax compliance, and redesign of company tax functions. Before joining BDO in 2017, he worked as a senior tax manager for Deloitte. He earned his MS from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

  • Gabe Rubio, in Los Angeles, has experience with the research credit and is part of BDO’s specialized tax services practice. He has worked for BDO for more than nine years and earned his BA from Washington State University.

  • Donna Sakony, in Cleveland, focuses on tax compliance, research, and planning for private and public companies. She has worked for BDO for 12 years and earned her BSBA from John Carroll University.

  • Joshua Swain, in McLean, Virginia, has experience providing tax compliance and consulting services to privately held businesses and multinational corporations. He previously worked as an international tax manager with Grant Thornton LLP and received his MPA from West Virginia University.

  • Brad Veltkamp, in Charlotte, North Carolina, provides expatriate compliance advice and consulting to clients. He has worked as a manager with PwC and in the global mobility function at Bank of America. He earned his BComm from the University of Saskatchewan.

  • John Woodward, in Chicago, has experience with tax compliance, accounting, development of company tax structures, and examinations. He has worked for BDO for almost eight years and was a tax officer for the Private Bank and Trust Co. and a senior tax associate with KPMG. He earned his MS in taxation from DePaul University.
