Sullivan, Martin A.

Martin A. Sullivan, chief economist and contributing editor for Tax Analysts’ daily and weekly publications and blog, is an expert on federal tax reform. Marty has written over 1,000 economic analyses for Tax Analysts’ publications and is the author of two books on tax reform. He has testified before Congress on numerous occasions.

Previously, Marty taught economics at Rutgers University and served as a staff economist at the U.S. Treasury Department and later at the congressional Joint Committee on Taxation. Marty graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College and received a PhD in economics from Northwestern University. In October 2013 he was the subject of a 4,500-word feature in The Washington Post by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Steven Pearlstein.

In 2019 he was awarded the Tax Council Policy Institute Pillar of Excellence Award, which recognizes individuals who have demonstrated throughout their career a commitment to advancing sound tax law and policy. In 2021 he was awarded the National Tax Association’s 2021 Davie-Davis Public Service Award, which honors NTA members who have served the public by providing insight and advice on taxation and government finance.
