1. I object to paying a third-party contractor $14.95 when the cost of a PTIN is $21. The third-party fee is 71% of the cost of the $21 PTIN fee. The IRS should do a better job of negotiating this rate; moreover, they should not charge a lot of IRS overhead to this program.
2. Regulated preparers such as attorneys, CPAs, enrolled agents who are regulated by their professional regulatory agencies should have a lower PTIN and third-part contractor rate, or should be provided a PTIN at no cost.
3. The third-party fee of $14.95 should be lower with each renewal, as the contractor should have less work to do with a renewal than a new PTIN application.
4. Both fees should be less for people who file less than 25 or 50 returns per year compared to someone who prepares 300 or 400. Make this fee equitable based on the number of returns filed.
