WASH, DC, December 11, 2008 -- Capitol Counsel is pleased to announce that in January, the Honorable Jim McCrery (R-La) will join the firm as a partner. Representative McCrery currently serves as the Ranking Member of the Committee on Ways and Means in the U.S. House of Representatives.

At the conclusion of the 110th Congress, McCrery will conclude a distinguished 20+ year career in the House. The last 16 years have seen Congressman McCrery gain distinction as a respected member of the Committee on Ways and Means, serving the powerful committee as Chairman of the Select Revenue Measures Subcommittee, Chairman of the Social Security Subcommittee, and for the past two years, as Ranking Member of the full committee.

"With Capitol Counsel's excellent lineup of seasoned professionals, and the firm's established expertise in taxes, health care, and trade, the firm provides a natural fit for my interests and experience," said McCrery.

Congressman McCrery has played an instrumental role in the crafting and adoption of major tax legislation, including the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001, Job Creation and Worker's Assistance Act of 2002, Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003, American Jobs Creation Act of 2004, Energy Policy Act of 2005, and the Gulf Opportunity Zone Act of 2005.

As a member of the Health Subcommittee for 14 years, Congressman McCrery helped draft and pass a number of pieces of major health care legislation, including the Balanced Budget Act of 1997and the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003.

In early 2007, Congressman McCrery worked with Chairman Rangel, Secretary Paulson, and U.S. Trade Representative Schwab, to craft the bipartisan framework for future bilateral and regional trade agreements which was announced by the House leadership in May, 2007. The Congressman also authored part of and helped shepherd through the Congress the Welfare Reform Act of 1996. Before joining the Committee on Ways and Mean in January, 1993, McCrery served on the Armed Services and Budget Committees. Prior to being elected to Congress, McCrery worked for Georgia Pacific Corporation as Counsel for Louisiana Operations and Regional Manager for Government Affairs.

"Capitol Counsel prides itself on effectively navigating politics, policy, and process, and Congressman McCrery is widely respected for his mastery of all three," said John D. Raffaelli, the firm's founding partner. "While Capitol Counsel has had a distinct Democratic tilt since its inception, the addition of Jim McCrery will give the firm plenty of firepower to reach both sides of the aisle."
